Staff Scientist/Engineer - Kansas City, MO

S.S Papadopulos & Associates, Inc. (SSP&A) is a small but highly-regarded technical firm with a nationally-recognized practice in hydrogeology/hydrology, geochemistry, contaminant studies, and environmental engineering and remediation. We are currently seeking a Staff Scientist or Engineer for our Kansas City, Missouri, office to provide technical support for a large, fast-paced environmental remediation project in Kansas City.  Over time it is expected that work will expand to other sites and locations within the Midwest.


  • Developing and implementing soil/groundwater investigation, sampling, and remediation work plans.
  • Providing office and field support for drilling, well installation, and soil/groundwater sampling programs.
  • Providing remediation design support, remediation construction oversight, and project progress/status evaluation.
  • Preparing environmental reports, including data evaluation and trend analysis, tabulation and mapping of data, and text preparation.
  • Assisting project managers and senior technical staff with initiating, planning, and executing project tasks, including preparing scopes of work, cost estimates, and schedules; tracking activities and budgets; assisting with supervision of subcontractors to ensure work is performed in accordance with contract specifications; and preparing routine progress reports.
  • Interacting with clients and assisting senior staff with company business development activities.


  • A Bachelor’s degree plus two or more years of professional experience or Master’s degree in Engineering, Geology, Hydrologic Sciences, or related physical sciences with strong quantitative skills.  Previous experience in environmental or engineering consulting is desirable.
  • Technical expertise in one or more of the following disciplines: groundwater/surface water hydrology, hydrogeology, remediation engineering, contaminant geochemistry, and/or environmental geophysics.
  • A strong work ethic, excellent organizational skills, and close attention to detail; an enthusiasm and willingness to pitch in on a variety of tasks; and a curiosity and enjoyment for work that is not “commodity”.
  • Basic understanding of the investigation and remediation of hazardous materials release sites under CERCLA/RCRA or State environmental cleanup programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to gather, compile, and manipulate datasets; effectively synthesize and interpret site data; and develop written technical documents and tabular presentation of data.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.
  • Existing certification for 40-hour HAZWOPER and current 8-hour refresher training as specified in OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120(e) are preferred.
  • Experience with GIS (ArcMAP and/or AutoCAD), database software (Access or PostgreSQL preferred), advanced Excel/VB capabilities, and/or programming (R or Python) is considered a plus.
