Senior Staff Scientist – Bethesda, MD

S. S. Papadopulos & Associates, Inc. (SSP&A) is a small but highly-regarded technical firm specializing in environmental and water-resource consulting since 1979.  We are currently seeking an enthusiastic, talented Hydrogeologist, Geologist, or Geochemist in our Bethesda, Maryland office. 

The successful applicant will possess a Master’s degree or PhD in one of the following areas:  Geology, Geochemistry, Hydrogeology, Hydrology, Environmental Engineering or related field. The successful applicant will be self-motivated, able to work independently and to collaborate with others, complete and oversee high-quality technical work, and possess exemplary writing skills.  Practical applied work experience is desirable.

Work activities may include writing technical memoranda, reports and data summaries; preparing geologic cross sections, interpreting geology for groundwater model development; interpreting geologic, hydrologic, and/or geochemical data and providing other technical support for water-resource and environmental projects.  Duties are expected to be completed in an office environment, with occasional field investigations.

Ideal Qualifications:

  • M.S. degree, or PhD degree in Geology, Geochemistry, Hydrogeology, Hydrology, Environmental Engineering or related field;
  • Fundamental understanding of physical hydrology, aqueous contaminant fate and transport, and geology.
  • Ability to compile and manipulate data using programming languages and/or database software (e.g., R, Access, advanced spreadsheet capabilities);
  • Experience preparing technical memoranda and reports;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Self-motivated and adaptable to a variety of project tasks;
  • Ability to manage projects and direct Junior-level staff;
  • Additional beneficial qualifications: Field experience (such as, drilling supervision, water quality and soil sampling, aquifer testing), 3 to 5 years of practical experience; and ArcGIS and database management.
