S.S. Papadopulos & Associates, Inc. (SSP&A) is currently seeking an enthusiastic and innovative Groundwater Modeler in our Rockville, Maryland corporate office. This position is hybrid after three to six months.
Work will cover a range of topics including water resource and quality analyses; development of conceptual models of groundwater systems; construction and calibration of groundwater flow and contaminant transport models; and data analysis supporting, remediation, remedy design and evaluation.
The successful applicant will combine self-motivation with a strong work ethic and possess a master’s degree (or equivalent combination of education and experience) in Geology, Hydrology, Hydrogeology, or Environmental Engineering; practical applied work experience; and excellent modeling, quantitative, and programming skills; so that they can complete high-quality technical work under the guidance and mentorship of senior modeling staff.
IDEAL QUALIFICATIONS
- Undergraduate and master’s degrees in Geology, Hydrology, Hydrogeology, or Environmental Engineering
- M.S. or B.S. with 3-to-5+ years’ practical work experience in groundwater modeling
- Experience working with the MODFLOW suite of codes (including MODFLOW 6, MODFLOW-USG, MT3D, MODPATH, etc.) and pre-/post-processors (e.g., Groundwater Vistas, GMS, or FloPy)
- Experience in model calibration and uncertainty analysis using PEST, PEST++, etc.
- Understanding of fundamentals of physical geology, stratigraphy, and structural geology
- Solid understanding of fundamentals of physical hydrology, flow in porous media, and analytical and numerical methods in hydrogeology
- Strong quantitative skills including applied math
- Capability to write software or modify existing software to solve mathematical representations of physical processes
- Experience compiling and manipulating datasets using programming and/or database software (e.g., Fortran, R, Python, advanced Excel capabilities, Access, PostgreSQL)
- Extensive experience with GIS software (ArcGIS, QGIS) and basic geospatial concepts
- Familiarity with modern workflows for reproducible scientific analysis

SALARY RANGE
Base annual salary (excluding bonuses and benefits) will depend on experience but is anticipated to range from $72,000 to $85,000.
